“Sunshine Everywhere” began as a set of guitar and synth improvisations recorded over five days in June 2018. The loose elements quickly suggested a four-part structure, and over the next three years, developed into a complex suite comprising more than 1,500 instrument recording edits and manipulated samples across 240 tracks.
Immediately compelling, the music is as familiar as it is unusual, moving quickly through a variety of contrasting moods and genres, including progressive rock, jazz-rock, fusion, rock, new wave, dub, electro-funk, cinematic, tech house, industrial, post-rock, experimental and world rhythms.
Each part has its own distinct character: the sampled-vocal acrobatics and expressive synth-polyrhythm interplays of “Sunshine” give way to the haunting keyboard, trumpet, bass and atmospherics of “Eclipse”, before exploding into the groove cycles of “Celebration Day”. The piece concludes with “UV Burn”, an unusual blend of interweaving rhythms, scorching outbursts and poignant melodies that ultimately arrives at some form of equilibrium, albeit one that’s coloured with nostalgia and regret. A life in a day.
